Tools, called "Goods" in Japan, are various miscellaneous items in the player party's possession, that can be used to solve puzzles on the field. They are a staple of the Wild Arms series, being present in every main game.

Overview[]

Typically, tools are the main instrument for solving various puzzles in dungeons. Some tools are required for proceeding, while others are needed only for unlocking optional content.

Common tools in the series include Radar, Bombs, and Grappling Hook.

Wild Arms 1-3[]

In earlier games, each character possesses their own set of tools, for a maximum of three or four, depending on the game. Tools can be found in dungeons, or received during events, and are automatically given to the corresponding character. In order to use them, the player needs to switch the party leader to the tool's owner, and choose the required tool.

Being inseparably tied to the character, tools become unavailable, if the character leaves the party for any reason. As a consequence, guest characters do not have any tools, as they would be lost when the character leaves.

Wild Arms 4[]

In Wild Arms 4, tools have been completely revamped. Now, tools can be found simply lying on the ground or hidden in "Photospheres" in most big dungeons, and Jude Maverick can pick up and use them at any time, instead of carrying his own set. Tools can be carried over from room to room, but they also disable jumping, preventing the player from taking them into other areas. Tools can interact with surroundings; swords may break, staves can be lit on fire, and so on.

Wild Arms 5[]

In Wild Arms 5 there's no traditional tools, but Dean Stark can find various Cartridges, which serve much the same role. Like tools in earlier games, Cartridges are permanently added to the player's arsenal, and can be used to solve puzzles.
